Poinsettias are one of the most popular winter holiday flowers, They Have very vibrant and beautiful colors for both leaves and flowers, despite the fact poinsettias are very popular in the winter, they are grown in very warm termperatures, poinsettias are tropical plants.

Provide them with a lot of sunlight — a sunny window with east, west, or southern exposure is best. Also try to keep the temperature between 65 and 75 degrees during the day, keeping in mind that the area around a drafty window can be a bit cooler than the rest of the room.make sure the plant leaves are touching a cold window, if they touch a  cold window the leaves will drop off. At night, poinsettias like a slightly lower temperature (55 – 65 degrees),

Avoid extreme temperatures and also avoid drastic drops in temperatures.


Water the poinsettia whenever the surface of the soil feels dry. Give the plant a good watering, and let the excess water drain out before you put it back in the container but don’t flood or soak it

You can put gravel in the bottom of the pot so that it will help keep the roots dry. If your home is dry during the winter months, a humidifier or plant mister can help your plant stay hydrated. Water the plant once a week.

Long term care for poinsettia

Poinsettia can last for a very long time if well taken care of, the beautiful flowers and leaves will last for more than 8 weeks after Christmas, after that the leaves will start falling off,

In mid to late March, prune the stems to 4 inches high at this time the plant will require less water since it will be in the dormant stage. water the plant every 10 to 12 days and continue to ensure it gets enough sunlight. 

Around spring when the temperature is consistently above 60 degrees you can put it out site during the day and bring it back inside at night.

In mid to late may repot the poinsettia in a slightly larger pot. Move it to a warm location with good light and resume watering. When new growth emerges, fertilize every two weeks with a complete fertilizer.

In the summer you can transfer it to a bigger container and permanently put the container outside or plant it in the garden to that it gets good sunlight and more nutrients from the soil. 

Poinsettias need 10 weeks of 12 hours or less of sunlight each day to show color. For Christmas flowers, keep the plant in complete darkness from 5 p.m. to 8 a.m. daily, starting around Oct.
